    About the answers

    The answer panel reasons over your numbers and the product spec. Where it states a dimension, that dimension is computed. Where it makes a judgement about comfort, it says so, because comfort depends on load placement, strap tension, shoulder slope and carry duration, and none of that is in the data.

    There is still no proprietary fit score, because we have not run a wear trial large enough to justify one. When we have, the numbers will come from that trial and we will say so.

    How to measure your torso

    Tilt your head forward. The bone that pushes out hardest at the base of your neck is the C7 vertebra. That is the top.

    Put your hands on your hips with thumbs back and find the shelf of bone at the top of your pelvis. Draw a level line across your spine at that height. That is the bottom.

    Measure the spine between them, tape flat. That is the same landmark pair used in the dataset behind this page, so your number is directly comparable.

    Where the numbers come from

    • Torso and shoulder estimates: regressions computed from ANSUR II (Gordon et al., 2012), 4,082 men and 1,986 women, 93 measured dimensions. Torso is cervicale height minus iliocristale height.
    • Trunk proportion by region: sitting height to stature ratio, from published values for South Asian, East Asian and European populations, applied through a transfer function fitted inside ANSUR II.
    • Regional stature means: NFHS for India, National Health and Nutrition Survey for Japan, NCD-RisC for Europe and North America.
    • Known limits: ANSUR II is a serving military sample, so it is fitter and narrower in age than the general public. Regional adjustment is proportional, not a separate national survey. Treat estimates as a starting point and measure yourself if the margin is close.
